Sri Lanka, originally Ceylon, is a country in South Asia. It is an island kingdom off the coast of India in the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka has a continuous documented history of almost 2,550 years thanks to the Mahawansha, and it is also mentioned in various ancient Indian literature. Because Sri Lanka is a tropical country, rain can fall at any time during the year in various sections of the country. The monsoon rains affect the tourist seasons in different parts of Sri Lanka. Visit the Sri Dhalada Maligawa and the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens in Kandy. Don’t miss the traditional Sri Lankan dance performance as well. Climb Riverstone to observe the Mini Worlds’ End before heading straight to Wasgamuwa. Visit Jaffna to witness the Portuguese-built Fort (1618), which was subsequently enlarged by the Dutch (1795), Nallur Temple, Keerimalai natural freshwater pond about 10 feet from the sea, and the Northern Province’s islands (Delft, Kayts, Leyden, Middleburg, and others) to see unknown Sri Lanka.

Kandy is a large city in central Sri Lanka. It’s set on a plateau surrounded by mountains, which are home to tea plantations and biodiverse rainforest. The city’s heart is scenic Kandy Lake (Bogambara Lake), which is popular for strolling. Kandy is famed for sacred Buddhist sites, including the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) shrine, celebrated with the grand Esala Perahera annual procession.

Bentota is a resort town on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. Its long Bentota Beach stretches north, where it becomes a sandy strip known as Paradise Island, parallel to Bentota Lagoon. Coral-rich dive sites include Canoe Rock. On Bentota River, centuries-old Galapota Temple has a large Buddha statue. Southeast is Lunuganga, the estate and gardens of architect Geoffrey Bawa. Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, has a long history as a port on ancient east-west trade routes, ruled successively by the Portuguese, Dutch and British. That heritage is reflected in its its architecture, mixing colonial buildings with high-rises and shopping malls. The imposing Colombo National Museum, dedicated to Sri Lankan history, borders sprawling Viharamahadevi Park and its giant Buddha.
